Nostalgia blended with modern commerce this week-end as a grand parade kicked off the Shanghai Shopping Festival. Seizing the spotlight at the festival were names established only through the passage of time: about one dozen, time honored brands.

Nanjing Road epitomizes Shanghai's flourishing business and the great changes to the city over a century.

Here the city's best known shops were established decades ago. Through the years they earned their reputations, thus to evolve into today's time-honored brands.

The restaurant Wangbaohe, snack shop Xiaoshaoxing, and glasses shop Wuliangcai,these historic brands made a more fashionable appearance at the festival in cartoon images.

Old fashioned vehicles; pedicabs and carriages joined in the parade of floats. Aboard the floats were not entertainment celebrities or business tycoons. They were model salesmen, the people who made important contributions to establishing the reputation of Nanjing Road.

A Shanghai resident said, "I am excited to be here. It shows the great development in Shanghai. I also brought my child. He should know the history of Nanjing Road."

The Shopping Festival lasts 'til October 6th, the end of the Golden Week holiday.
