This year 400 films are on public screening. 30 cinemas in downtown Rio are showing the films and the festival committee has set up free screenings at twelve open air sites. That opens up the festival to the underprivileged, in a city where that gulf between the wealthy and those in poverty is wide. Not everyone can afford the seven dollar cost of admission to the cinemas. The free screenings are a tradition in Rio, beginning with the festival's inception in 1999.
