Special Report:   Cultural Heritage Day

This week, two Chinese relics were added to the World's Most Endangered Heritage Sites. An old building in Shanghai, and the Xumishan grottos in Shanxi, are among the 100 relics listed.

Concern over the damage that excessive human activities have caused to cultural heritage dominated the speech by the President of the World Monuments Fund.

And according to research by the group, the main threat to cultural relics worldwide is caused by human beings: from armed conflicts to environment pollution, climate changes, and urban development.

Of the 100 heritage sites on the catalog, six are facing immediate threat from floods, rising sea levels, and expanding deserts.

However, uncontrolled urban development is becoming the biggest threat for the ancient relics.

The Chinese government was recognized by the World Monuments Fund in its protection and preservation of a great number of heritage sites.
