Shakira, who is wrapping up her Oral Fixation Tour, broke the record at Zocalo Square, one of the biggest plazas in the world. The record for a gathering there had ben held by the local rock band,"Cafe Tacuba", who drew 170,000 fans for a concert in 2005.
Surrounded by the square's illuminated colonial buildings, the pop star belted out her signature hits like "Estoy Aqui," "The dejo Madrid," and "Hips don't lie" to the adoring fans who sang along. Sunday's concert was Shakira's second in Mexico City in two weeks.
Yolanda Riesgo, Shakira fan, said, "We want other big artists should play at the Zocalo so that the people who live in Mexico City have access to these types of events because a concert is very expensive and the majority of the people can't afford it."
Shakira is staying in Mexico until Wednesday, when she performs in the northern city of Monterrey. After that her Oral Fixation will take her to Istanbul, Turkey, where the tour wraps up, 119 concerts down the line, for an estimated total audience of 2 million.
