Special Report:   Cultural Heritage Day

Changsha in central China is setting up nearly a hundred new stone steles to mark and protect a variety of historic and cultural heritage sites in the region. History set in stone, you might say.

The first stele was installed on Tuesday morning. It's for the private residency from the Qing Dynasty called "The Garden of Oranges".

Resident Mr. Liu said, "I've lived nearby for twenty years. But I didn't know the garden is a historic site until today when I saw the stele."

Many of the original steles have lost their markings due to warfare over the intervening centuries or through natural weathering. The local government project to restore them gives a new brief introduction of the historic sites being marked.

Builder Mr. Li said, "We started on Tuesday night. On average, one stele takes two days to complete."

The 91 sites set to get new stone name cards include the former homes of famous people, archeological sites and ancient cultural heritage.
