A fashion festival has opened in Shanghai. In its promising to last longer than the Beijing Fashion Week, one might detect a certain competitive rivalry between China's two greatest cities. And of course being Shanghai, it's a very, very glitzy affair.
On Monday's opening of the Shanghai Fashion Festival saw a performance by the Twelve Girls' Band, one of the country's most famous folk music groups.
Then came a presentation of nearly 170 outfits from thirteen Chinese designers. First was "A Dialogue Between Ballet and Fashion", the collection heavy on the use of feathers and images of flight. It was followed by a string of boldly original designs, covering the range from business wear to underwear.
