Thousands of people gathered in northwestern Colombia for the famous "Devil's Carnival". The celebration takes place every two years in the small town of Riosucio.

It dates back to 1847 when European and African traditions were mixed. Effigies of the devil are carried through the streets. And some people dress as demons, with elements indicative of the mixed-race heritage. The devil's black horns represent the strength of the bull and of the black race. And the slanted eyes, like those of the jaguar, represent the native people of Colombia. The trident, representing the white race, also symbolizes the highly strict Catholic religion.
