Xinjiang is the crossroads, between east and west. And Muqam, the music of the Uygur people, has long been one of the region's key cultural contributions. The folk tradition is now in the spotlight, at the Sixth International Muqam Seminar, in Urumqi.

Muqam is the general term for a variety of performing arts, spread among Uygur community. It's composed of songs and dances, with both folk and classical music. The form is diverse in content and in style, with a wide variety of musical instruments used.
