A dance show titled "West Hunan, My Homeland," left its Beijing audience enchanted on Friday night, with its poetic lyricism. As part of the Ethnic Arts Festival, the show is making its debut in the Chinese capital.

The dance is a romanticized portrayal of daily life among Hunan's local ethnic groups, including the Miao and Tujia peoples. Traditional songs and dances depict the farm work, courting, and religious rituals that are unique to these minorities. And most of the props, like baskets and umbrellas, were borrowed directly from local households. The China Ethnic Arts Festival, held every five years, is helping to preserve ethnic minority performing arts that are in danger of dying out.
