In New York City, this year's Bollywood Fashion Awards were hosted here. Top honors went to rising star Rachel Roy.
The Bollywood Fashion Awards were handed out in a vibrant show at Manhattan's legendary Roseland ballroom. Celebrity royalty from India's film and entertainment industries all gathered to pay their respects to the growing prominence of the South Asian community.
Miss Pakistan 2006 Sehr Mahmood said:"People in America get to know more about Bollywood and Bollywood is one of the biggest film industries. I think it produces more movies than Hollywood, so, I think it's great."
Supermodel Iman presented Roy with the award for outstanding contribution to American Fashion. Known in hip-hop circles as the wife of rap mogul Damon Dash, Roy has recently made a name for herself with her elaborate designs.
Saturday's ceremony also served as a de facto fashion show for new Indian designers. Those honored included Manish Malhotra, who was named designer of the year for film, and Sabyasashi Mukherjee, who won designer of the year for haute couture.
Fashion designer Sab Yasahi Mukherjee said:"I'm showing you what India stands for, because there's going to be an eclectic mix of Indian textiles, but, you know we have a preconceived notion about what Bollywood is, it's considered to be bright and brashful and colourful and sequinned, so this is quite an antithesis of what people expect Bollywood to be."
The evening was hosted by Mumbai Dreams lead Manu Narayan with musical numbers that ranged from Broadway-style performances to hip-hop, all infused with a heavy dose of Indian influences.
