"2046", the latest work from Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai, tells a futuristic story about boarding a train to retrieve old memories. But so far, most of the interest aroused by the film has had to do with its 5-year production process. The long-awaited film finally sees its premiere Monday night in Shanghai. For both director and cast, it's time to heave a sigh of relief and enjoy the applause of the audience.
Asian superstars Tony Leung, Faye Wong and Chang Chen, among others, were at the press conference before the premiere.
As expected, the Shanghai media spared no effort to cover the hype surrounding the premiere, as well as adding a bit of their own.
Probably the movie with the strongest cast ever assembled in China, "2046" also takes the record for its marathon production time.
Believe it or not, director Wong Kar-wai staggered over the finish line as recently as ten days ago, after completing the last bit of editing to his own satisfaction.
Most of the major cast members admitted that they felt happy mainly because the film was finally finished.
