| China is strongly opposed to a proposal that would impose carbon tariffs on imported goods, saying it violates the rules of the World Trade Organization, as well as the spirit of the Kyoto Protocol. |
The Ministry of Commerce said on Friday that collecting such duties would enable developed countries to protect trade in the name of protecting the environment. This would disrupt the order of international trade and could lead to trade wars. Also, the move would not do anything to help climate change negotiations.
The US, Canada, and the European Commission have all submitted proposals to raise duties on imports from countries that are not making comparable efforts to reduce greenhouse gases.
The Commerce Ministry also said this would seriously hurt the interests of developing countries. And it would hurt the international community's level of cooperation in riding out the financial crisis.
