Officials attending the 5th China-EU Round Table meeting which ends on Tuesday have agreed that cooperation between the recycling industries in China and the European Union should be enhanced.

The Chairman of the China Economic and Social Council, Wang Gang says developing a recycling industry is one of China's key strategies in promoting economic and social advancement. He says China will achieve this by stepping up exchanges and cooperation with the international community.

Participants at the meeting said about 130 million tons of waste were produced in China in 2008. And that China currently has around 100 thousand recycling companies.

But experts say China lacks the sufficient technology and equipment necessary for classified waste collection in major urban centers.
