Construction began on a major nuclear power plant on Tuesday. The power plant is expected to generate 45 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output will be the biggest in China.

The Yangjiang nuclear power plant in Dongping Town is just one of the many national level projects under China's economic stimulus package. It is being built by Guangdong Nuclear Power Group with an investment of 70 billion yuan. The plant will have six 1,000-megawatt units. The first unit will begin operations in 2013. All the units will be built by 2017.

The plant will allow China to save 16 million tons of coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 36 million tons. China plans to double its nuclear capacity by 2020. Nuclear energy would then account for 4 percent of the projected energy supply.
