Large portions of the region's transport network system were damaged during a massive earthquake in May this year. Rebuilding has begun but will now be speeded up under the new fiscal stimulus plan. According to the Ministry of Transportation, Sichuan Province will have close to 2200 kilometers of express ways by the end of this year.
While rebuilding of shipping infrastructure is being accelerated. Investment in road and water transport networks in the province is expected to hit 33 billion yuan by the end of this year up 35 percent from 2007.
