Special Report:   Global Financial Crisis

One long-standing attraction for many choosing to study overseas has been the chance to stay on and find work. But with unemployment on the rise in the United States and Europe, many are heading home instead. For these new graduates, they want to serve their country, especially one which they believe is headed for strong economic growth.

A special job fair held in France is attracting attention from overseas Chinese students. The fair is co-hosted by local authorities from Shenzhen and the Chinese embassy in France. On offer at the event were 600 positions from 50 companies in Shenzhen. Many Chinese students in France were keen to grab this chance to return home to work.

Zhu Xiaoyu, Minister-Counselor of Education Department of Chinese Embassy in France said "Prior to this fair, we also hosted similar fairs providing working opportunities in Hubei and Zhejiang provinces. Many who turned up included both under-graduates and post-graduates, even scholars, who already held jobs here."

For some, it is matter of sentiment to return and serve their own countries. An added plus is growing confidence in the domestic economic situation.

Ke Yang, PhD student in civil engineering said "My roots are in China, my future career development will be in China, so I'm willing to go back to China."

Liu Xiao, Master in consultive management said "I think the economy in Europe is developing slower than it is in China. In China there's much more potential."

As for Chinese enterprises, they are also welcoming overseas students. According to figures from the Chinese Embassy in France, there are now over 20 thousand Chinese students in France, more than half of them are studying for masters and doctorates. And companies are keen to tap this new source of knowledge and expertise, for future economic growth in China.
