Designed right here on home-ground, the train is set to run at 380 kilometers per hour, slicing five or more hours off the current journey-time, and bringing it down to just four hours.

China already holds the record for the fastest train service in the world, its Beijing-Tianjin line boasting a speed of 350 kilometers per hour. But it will be beaten out by the new Beijing-Shanghai Express, which, when it finally opens, is likely to post a stiff challenge to airlines.

Dozens of flights, each lasting 1.5 hours currently operate everyday between the two cities.
