The most affected sectors are community health, water supply, tourism and the people's living conditions, according to the study on economic impact of environmental sanitation of the World Bank's Water and Sanitation Program.
Researchers have started working on the second phase of the study to draft countering measures, focusing on the management of wastes and changes in personal behaviors and hygienic practices.
The outcome of the second phase will also provide Vietnamese leaders with estimates on the costs and economic gains of different solutions to improving environmental sanitation.
