Special Report: 2008 Beijing Olympic GamesChinese customs officials have set up a number of measures to speed up the entry of Olympic-related visitors and items. In tandem with that, Chen Lijun finds out that customs will also step up the number of security checks it performs to ensure the Games are safe.
During the upcoming Beijing Olympics, customs will have dedicated channels for International Olympic Committee officials, athletes and Olympic-related items. A special system will also be used to register news reporting equipment to facilitate the entry of Olympic reporters.
Hao Chongfu, Official of General Administration of Customs, said, "We signed an ATA pact with the World Customs Organization. Simplified procedures will be used for Olympic-related items. If the items aren't processed with ATA procedures, more complicated procedures would need to be used, like guaranteed fund payments, bank guarantees and others."
Customs officials have also said they'll be conducting more spot checks on Olympics-related items to ensure security for the event. The national customs office and the customs departments of the six co-host cities have set up a network to link up their information. Customs officials have also coordinated their emergency plans with local police and security departments.
