China has raised on-grid power tariffs for the first time since June 2006. Rates have been raised by an average of 0.02 yuan per kilowatt hour. The country's top economic planning body said on Wednesday that the move aims to give a small boost to power generating companies struggling with surging coal costs. The rates came into effect on Tuesday. Specific changes to on-grid rates for different regions and generators varied and will apply primarily to industrial and commercial users.
Quake-hit areas will be exempt from the tariff rise, though. The rise will effectively ease pressure on generators, like Huadian Power and China Power International Development. An official with Huaneng Group said the rise would offset some of the increase in coal costs, but was unable to provide any numbers.
