Chinese exporting enterprises have focused their efforts on European and American markets. But given the US subprime crisis and the yuan's appreciation, the Ministry of Commerce encouraged more investment in Eastern Asia at the 2-day East Asia Economic Forum, which opened yesterday.

According to an estimate by the Asian Development Bank, many of the ASEAN economies will grow by 5 percent this year. Investment by member economies account for 30 percent of foreign investment in the bloc. While Chinese investment in ASEAN countries accounts for only 4 percent of foreign investment in the bloc.

Investment opportunities are mainly found in the infrastructure, agriculture, energy and hi-technology industries. ASEAN members have developed a number of preferential policies on foreign investment.
