The Beijing Municipal economic planner says the city aims to reduce its energy consumption per unit of GDP by five percent in 2008. It's also planning to cut the amount chemical oxygen demand, a gauge for water pollution by 10 percent, and sulfur dioxide by four percent from current levels.
Wang Haiping, vice director BJ Municipal Commission of Development & Reform, said, "First, we will further improve the city's air quality. In addition, over 15 hundred old buses and two thousand taxies will be taken off the road. We will also strengthen management of vehicles in the postal and cleaning sectors."
The municipal economic planner has also set the city's sewage treatment rate at 93 percent. It says this year will also see recycled water utilization rate stand at 60 percent, while the green coverage rate will reach 51 percent.
