The 36-kilometer cable-stayed bridge spans Hangzhou Bay, and will mean big cuts to the travel time between Shanghai and Ningbo,a busy port in eastern Zhejiang Province. Construction of the massive, six-lane bridge began in November 2003, and cost a total of 11.8 billion yuan.

It's part of plans to boost economic integration and development in the Yangtze River Delta, a region of almost 100,000 square kilometers, comprising Shanghai, as well as the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
