RFID tags can access information more easily and quickly than regular luggage barcode tags. With built-in silicon chips, the tags are a much safer way to store information.
Hong Kong Airport has initially invested 50 million Hong Kong dollars in the system, and expects efficiency and management to improve. The RFID tags can help track baggage, and allow airport staff to easily locate them. Everyday, some 40,000 pieces of baggage or about 90 percent of outgoing luggage, have the new tags attached.
Experts say if all airports use this technology, it could save more than 700 million US dollars.
