Consumers will have to pay for plastic bags in China's supermarkets and shops starting in June. The government launched a crackdown on plastic bags on Tuesday, banning the production of ultra-thin bags and forbidding retailers from giving out free bags from June 1st.

The new rule says all retailers have to clearly indicate the price of their plastic bags and charge customers for the bags. The Ministry of Commerce and the National Development and Reform Commission will develop detailed regulations on the management of plastic bag use.
They have also required related departments to strengthen their supervision on the quality of plastic bags and create tax policies that crack down on plastic pollution.
