Special Report:   National Day holiday

Beijing Tian''anmen Square

For years, China's week-long National Day vacation has been regarded as the golden season for sightseeing. This year is no different. So let's take a look at what people are doing all over China to enjoy the sights of China.

In Beijing, local revellers head for the suburbs to enjoy seven days off during what's known as golden week. The recently-mounted stage presentation Dynasty of Golden Masks is drawing huge crowds. The program offers singing, dancing, acrobatics, magic and fashion shows.

In the city's Huairou District, many popular resorts are seeing the annual surge of sightseers. The mountain scenic spots offer fine-dining, a hands-on experience of farm life, fishing, as just a couple of things that are perennial attractions.

During the Holiday, the East China city of Shanghai is abuzz with presentations meant to highlight traditional culture both for local people and for tourists. At the Yuyuan Garden, sightseers can experience tea drinking, traditional opera performances, and garden tours. Also, there is the fashion show titled, "Five Thousand Years of China". It features the garments of all major dynasties in Chinese history from the Tang in the 7th century to the Qing, whichended about a hundred years ago.

The most popular activity is a nightly parade of water borne floats. More than 20 vessels take part in creating the spectacle on the Huangpu River. The event is a blend of lantern shows and fireworks displays.

In southwest China's Sichuan province, a new panda zoo is opening for the National Day holidays. Known as "Secrets of a Panda's Life", the facility is intended to inform visitors about the endangered species. Touring the garden, spectators gain a better understanding of the coming of age, mating, and birth of pandas.

In East China's Fujian province, the local Sea Goddess Temple is packed with people, as worshippers come from far and wide to pay respects to the ancient deity.

And along the Minjinag River, nearly twenty kilometers along the banks have been turned into a huge park, for local residents and incoming tourists.

In Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest of the country, folk culture is the ruling theme for the National Day celebrations. There are grape-eating contests, a grape-picking competition, in addition to centuries-old dances and music making.
