China's capital city is holding a public hearing Wednesday morning to discuss the possibility of reducing subway fares to encourage more people to use public transport.

There are 2 proposals on tap. The first is to lower the price of a one-way ticket to 2 yuan, or about 25 US cents. Another option is to adopt a flexible pricing scheme, ranging from 2 to 4 yuan based on the distance travelled.

Transportation authorities say the preferred first option, cutting prices by a third, will cost the city 1 billion yuan a year. But it will benefit 80 percent of the city's public transport passengers.
