The 2007 China Internet Conference has kicked off in Beijing. Chinese Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan addressed Monday's opening ceremony, noting the rapid development of the internet in China.

There are more than 1.3 million portal operators in China, nearly a four-fold increase since the end of 2000. And dot-cn domain names number 6.15 million now, the first time they have exceeded the registered number of dot-coms.

Chinese internet users spent more than 160 billion yuan on the internet in the first half of the year. This makes sense, considering China has over 160 million web users, about an eighth of the population.
