The Chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Qiangba Puncog says the region's economy has grown at an average rate of 12 percent over the last 6 years. Qiangba Puncog also says the exiled Dalai Lama's aim of Tibetan independence will not be approved by the region's people.

The region's top official says Tibet's per capita GDP reached 10-thousand yuan in 2006, for the first time in history.

He says Tibet received 2-and-a-half million tourists last year, including 150-thousand from overseas. The chairman says the opening of the region's first railway is the main reason for the increase...and that support from central government helped Tibet achieve this growth.
