A special livestock breeding zone, the biggest in Myanmar, is being set up in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw, sources with the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department said on Friday.
The zone covering over 2,360 hectares has started to raise over 1,800 milk cows, sheep and goats, and livestock-breeding-related factories are also being established.
Private entrepreneurs have started their work with the zone, which is made up of seven sub-zones in three townships of Yemethin, Lewe and Tatkon in the new capital region, according to this week's Yangon Times.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) planned to aid the zone project which will cover breeding of 20,000 milk cows, 100,000 ducks and one million chickens, local reports said.
The livestock breeding zone aims to breed milk cows in a bid to meet the daily rising demand of milk in the area, livestock breeders said.
A milk processing factory will also be included in the project.
According to official statistics, Myanmar imported 22.2 million U.S. dollars worth of condensed milk and 2.1 million dollars worth of milk powder and other milk food and malted milk in the fiscal year 2005-06 which ended in March.
Meanwhile, Myanmar has imported from India high-quality nutritious feedstuff for milk cows to raise milk production for the first time since July 2006, local reports said.
