Police in Shanghai have new armed patrol vehicles to help with law enforcement.

More than 800 police officers will start patrolling twenty four hours a day from May 1st. They will mainly deal with serious accidents and possible terrorist attacks or hostage cases. Areas with high crime rates will come under particular scrutiny by patrollers.

The Shanghai police department has also ordered three helicopters from Europe. The choppers will be used for directing traffic, rescuing people trapped by fire in skyscrapers and in medical emergencies. The helicopters are due to start operations next year.
