Beijing officials on Wednesday announced long awaited details of when the city's four new subway lines will come online.

Officials say the capital's north-south subway Line 5 will begin operation in September this year. The west-southeast subway Line 10 and the Airport Extension, will open to traffic on June 30, 2008, just in time for the summer Olympics. Meanwhile Line 4, which stretches from Longeicun at the Summer Palace to Majialou in south Beijing, is expected to open on September 30, 2009.

The municipal government also plans to introduce 264 new carriages on the two existing subway lines later this year as it moves to modernize the capital's rapid transport system in advance of the Beijing Olympic Games.
