The population of Chinese Internet users has increased by almost one-third during the year 2006. Data shows that the total number of people using the Internet in China has reached 132 million.

The high-speed broadband Internet users also rose rapidly in the country, reaching 52 million. Such figures indicate a 30 percent growth in the number of web users in just 12 months. With more than 200 million netizens, China became the second-largest Internet market in terms of user numbers, following the U.S.

Experts say that the growth is attributed to the country's booming economy, as well as the huge numbers of Internet cafes that made web accessible to ordinary people.
