Telecommunications disruptions caused by Tuesday's earthquake in south Taiwan have stopped foreign trade companies along coastal areas in the Chinese mainland in their tracks. Though the Ministry of Information Industry have taken measures and tried to repair the broken-down, the international access on the internet are still jammed.

Shut off from access to international websites, foreign trading companies in coastal provinces like Guangdong, Zhejiang and Fujian, are forced to sit and wait it out. Mr. Lin, a Taiwan businssman working in Beijing,has lost connections with his family in Taiwan due to the internet inaccessibility .

Lin Yanhong, vice chairman of Association of Taiwan Business, said in Beijing: "Thanks to the quick and correct measures taken by the government, we did not hear much complaints from the Taiwan businessmen here. "

The Internet congestion caused much more troubles for companies which have servers in Taiwan or in the US.The on-line trade suffered a setback in recent days. A shenzhen companies are anxiously waiting for the internet back to normal as it normally contacts and receives orders from its customers on the Internet

A company manager said: "The inaccessibility to overseas websites has delayed my contact with all our clients.Orders worth of 2 million Yuan are affected."

Ebay is also taking remedy measures to restore its pages.Students seeking studies overseas have also felt the inconviniences brought by the shut-off of the internet.Some agencies have sent students information through mails to the local imigrant bureau.

The mainland telecommunication operators said they are working with overseas counterparts to repair the damaged cables. But as the repairs still need several weeks, the Internet congestion will continue for days.
