China will introduce more stringent vehicle emission standards next year, to help improve the environment for the 2008 Olympics.

The capital Beijing, will lead the plan in adopting the Euro IV standard, while other cities will upgrade their emission standards to Euro III.

China's State Environmental Protection Administration says, the new standards will take effect from January the 1st, in Beijing. From that date, all new cars sold in the city will meet the new standards. Old cars will have to undergo an emissions test and obtain a green pass to run on the roads. The capital expects to eliminate 300,000 thousand under-qualified vehicles. Other cities will adopt the Euro III standard from July 1st next year.
