The annual event initiated more than a decade ago has served as a crucial mechanism for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to run the Chinese economy.
In 2006, the country sped up industry restructuring, and made more efforts to encourage self-innovation in all walks of life. With new progress made in the reforms of some key areas, China has also further opened itself to the outside world.
In addition, China has accelerated the development of social undertakings, such as education, health care and social welfare, thus improving people's living standards.
Although great economic achievements were made in 2006, there are some problems that still need addressing. These include an imbalanced economic structure, inefficient growth pattern and incomplete working mechanism, problems that have not been fundamentally solved.

At this year's conference, participants focused on strategies to speed up agricultural development, adjust the industrial structure, promote regional balanced development, save energy, protect environmental resources and deepen economic reform. They also looked at ways they could accelerate the country's opening-up, expand the trade volume with other countries, push for the reform of the administrative system and the self-improvement of the government so as to promote social harmony.
In the coming year, the government will promote consumption and innovation-based industries, easing China's dependence on investment and export-driven manufacturing.
The year 2006 was one of great progress for China's economic development. Forging ahead along the course set under macro-control policies, the planners will strive to maintain the country's rapid economic growth in a healthier and more harmonious way.
