Another stage of the south-to-north water diversion project is now under way. Construction began on the Henan section of the central route on Thursday.

The 731-kilometer section is the longest part of the project, and will cost an estimated 67 billion yuan. 43 cities and townships in the province will benefit from the province's annual water quota diverted through the canal when the first phase of the project is completed by 2008.

The central route of the project aims to divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China's Hubei province to north China, including Beijing and Tianjin municipalities. Construction began on the 1,300-kilometer central channel in 2003.
