Chinese Premier Wen speaks on rural pension reform

Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao, says all levels of governments in the country should increase their efforts to implement the rural pension pilot program. He was speaking at a a work conference on reform of the rural social security and pension system.

Premier Wen Jiabao said China's new rural social security and pension system should cover nearly all rural areas by 2020.

He said the government had made various achievements in the countryside over the past decade, including the abolition of agricultural tax and school fees, and providing direct subsidies.

Premier Wen said the establishment of the new rural social security and pension system is key to ensuring social fairness and narrowing gaps between urban and rural areas. He said the new system is important to improve the nation's social security system and maintain social stability.
