We’ll start by talking to the first ever Chinese weightlifter to win two Olympic gold medals; then we’ll meet the gymnast who, despite achieving considerable success, has consistently failed to shine in her preferred discipline; after that we’ll learn about a simmering rivalry that is likely to be settled in the Beijing Olympic swimming pool; and finally, we’ll hear how it takes not just strength but also skill to be a top hammer thrower.

Zhan Xugang was born in May 1974 in Zhejiang Province. He first started weightlifting when he was just ten years old. He joined the Zhejiang Provincial team when he was 13, and became a member of the national team seven years later. Within two years of that, he was an Olympic champion.

Zhang Nan comes originally from Guizhou, in China’s south. As a gymnast, she achieved fame by becoming the first Chinese girl to win all-around medals – both of them bronze – at the World Championships and Olympics. Although Zhang Nan - 22 this year – is a veteran by gymnastic standards, she is hoping to add to her medals collection at this year’s Beijing Olympics.
