The principal architect of the design is Rem Koolhaas of the Office
for Metropolitan Architecture of the Netherlands. Born in Rotterdam
in 1944, Koolhaas spent his childhood in Indonesia before moving to
Amsterdam. He studied architecture at Architectural Association School
in London and Connell University in the US. In 1975, he founded the
Office for Metropolitan Architecture in London. Koolhass is currently
Chief Architect of OMA of the Netherlands and professor of Harvard
University.
His work, “Delirious New York”, published by Oxford
University Press in 1978, is recognized as a classic for researches
into the culture and architecture of New York. His city theory,
“S,M,L,XL”, has been regarded as the “Bible of
Architecture” by architecture students.
The main construction projects Koolhaas has been involved in included
the overall urban planning for the French city of Lille and the
planning for the headquarters of the Universal Studio in Los Angeles.
Many of his works have won awards, including Pritzker, the most
sought-after prize in the world’s architecture circles.
Other main works by OMA included the Public Library of Seattle
of the United States, the Dutch Embassy in Germany and a concert
hall in Porto of Portugal.
