This May, the first China based joint institute of proteomics was founded in Beijing Normal University. Its establishment signifies the mission of Chinese scientists into this leading field of life science in the post-gene era. The chief scientist and the ministry’s vice president is Professor He Dacheng. He returned to China last October from the United States. Majoring in biophysics, Doctor He Dacheng graduated from Peking University in 1968. Working in Qin Huang Dao for 10 years, he became a cell-biology graduate student at Peking University.
He: I remember one day in 1978, I got a phone call from my teacher. He asked me, ‘why aren’t you back to Peking University to take a master’s degree here?’ And I was so excited. After two and a half months in October of 1978, I stepped on Peking University campus and once again I started a new stage of my life.
After graduation, he was appointed as a teacher in Beijing Normal University in 1981.
He: I was no longer young when I became a student again. It was in early 80’s. We realized that China was so much lagged behind the advanced level of the world. So this made everybody feel like having a big stone pressure on our heart. I was a PhD student. Very soon the university sent me to the United States to get more training. So I went to MIT, the cell biology department.
In 1998, with the school’s approval, Doctor He Dacheng went to Doctor Sheldon Penman’ lab in MIT. From then on, people could always see a Chinese scholar on the campus.
He: My project was nuclear matrix. That was a very new research area. My professor was Sheldon Penman. And he was so famous. And he is so friendly to Chinese. And he said, ‘I believe that Chinese people can do the best work in science because they have 5000 years’ history.’ I had majored in 3 different projects: the one is nuclear matrix, the second is the breast cancer, and the third is kinetic force centrifuge.
As time passed, his achievements accumulated. Gradually, Doctor He became a well-known scientist in his research fields.
He: In the United States, you can see a lot of Chinese scholars. Some of them already got really the great car and even great house and garden, like that. But very often, they already lowered their standards. I always tell myself, I cannot just utilize this system to do all my work for all the time. I told them and I always think many of them should be back to China. Very often, I return to China and by the way I buy the tickets fro myself. I have some seminars and communication with colleagues. I just hope that we can make the research level in China closer to the advanced level in the world.
In the winter of 2000, Professor He finished his 12-year research in America and gladly returned to his mother university currently, Professor He is leading his team working on a ‘973’ project.
He: I’m so glad that now, different from the situation of that I was in the United States, now I get a big and great and wonderful team. I am really feeling that I’m working in my own and our own system and we are doing things for our country. You never can get this kind of feeling, no matter how great the achievements you got when you work in other countries.

` 今年5月,北京师范大学成立了我国首家蛋白质学院 ,它的建立标志着我国提前进入后基因时代生命科学的前沿,它的常务副院长便是去年回国定居的科学家—何大澄教授。
何教授1968年毕业于北京大学生物物理专业,毕业后到秦皇岛工作了十年。
何:1978年的一天我接到大学时代老师的电话问我是否愿意报考硕士研究生,那是文革后第一次能想象到可以受到这么高的教育。我非常激动,但我意识到只剩下两个月的时间了。两个半月后就是1978年的10月我进入北大,开始我人生新的里程。
1981年毕业后何教授来到北师大任教。
何:当再次成为一名学生时,我已经不再年轻了。那时在八十年代初期每一位科技人员都意识到了中国再科技领域已远远落后于世界先进水平这像一块巨石压在每个人心头上。(这时)我还在北师大读博士,(后来)很快学校派我到美国学习,于是我来到了MIT麻省理工大学分子生物学系。
1988年他带着学校的嘱托来到了麻省理工大学。从此,校园里常能看到为数不多的一位中国学者。
何:我当时的题目是核基质那时一个非常新的领域,导师是潘漫,他名声显赫,但对中国人非常好,他告诉我,他相信中国人能在科研领域做得最好,因为中国有五千年的文明史。在这些年的科研中,我主攻三个领域,核基质,着丝点、动粒复合体和乳腺癌。
时光一天天的流逝,收获也与日俱增。
何:在美国你能看到许多中国留学生和学者,他们许多人已经拥有了汽车,洋房和花园,但同时他们也降低了自己的价值标准。但我总是告诉自己,你不能总是用人家的体系来工作,因为 我无论取得怎样的成果,都是在别人的体系下来工作。这不是我的目标,我要回到中国去, 当我在美国时,我经常回国内,顺便说一句,我都是自费参加大学里的座谈、研讨。我是想尽最大努力提高国内科研层次,能够交流些信息,告诉他们发达国家科研新成果。我希望能使国内科研水平接近美国和世界先进水平。
2000年的一个冬日何教授终于结束了在美国12年的科研工作,回到了母校。
何:现在我觉得开心的一件事是我有一个人数众多、经验丰富的科研队伍,自己在自己的国家工作,在自己构建的体制下工作。这是你在任何国家都得不到的感受,无论他的设备有多么先进。
现在他带着全所几十人正投入国家“973”(重大基础项目)科研项目。
