The "Primary School English Education Seminar", sponsored by the Beijing Academy of Education Science, was held recently. 200 select primary school teachers from all over the country attended. The Ministry of Education demanded that all primary schools at town level and above should provide English courses at and above grade 3 from 2002, and that developing pupils motivation and interest should be the
key. During the seminar, Liu Xinjie and two other teachers, who all won joint first prize in the first National Primary School English Teaching Competition, gave demonstration lessons. All participants agreed that their teaching exemplified the very best of quality-oriented education.
Recently more and more attention has been attached to environmental protection. In order to give publicity to people who have made great contributions in this area. "Conservation & Environmental Grants offered by Ford Motor Company" were presented to six outstanding environmental protection Projects. This followed a period of 3 months' careful selection. Some state leaders attended the prize-giving ceremony held in the Great Hall of the People and gave out the prizes to the winners.
A wonderful variety of performances in English were recently given at an event sponsored by the education bureau of Xicheng district. Students from all the district's schools gave performances in English, including short dramas, recitation and singing. Their impressive performances and clear pronunciation were highly praised by the judges. All the work for this show, including production, stage design, sound and lighting, were undertaken by the students themselves. This show revealed not only the ability of students, but also the achievements in English language teaching since the district has implemented a system of quality-oriented education.

北京教科院日前举办了“小学英语教学研讨会”，来自全国的小学英语教师骨干共200人出席了研讨会。教育部要求自2002年起全国镇以上小学从三年级起都要开设英语课，而且小学英语教学应以培养学生的学习兴趣和良好的学习习惯为主要目标。会上，获首届全国小学英语教学竞赛一等奖的刘新杰等三位老师作了教学示范。与会者一致认为他们的课体现了素质教育的核心思想。
环境保护近年来越来越受到人们的关注，为了能使环保英雄走上前台，“福特汽车环保奖”经过三个月的严格评选，有六个项目获奖。颁奖大会在人民大会堂举行，国家有关领导参加了会议并为获奖者颁奖。
日前西城区教育局主办了一次别开生面的“英语能力展示活动”，来自全区的中小学生用英语表演了短剧、朗诵、歌曲演唱等节目。他们精彩的表演，纯正的语音博得了评委的一致好评。此次活动的全部工作包括节目制作、舞台设计、音像灯光等都由学生们承担完成，不但展示了他们的能力，而且表现了西城区在实施素质教育的过程中，英语教学方面取得的成果。
