Special Report: 7.1-magnitude Quake Hit Qinghai, China |

Who is the injured girl seen with President Hu during his visit to the quake-hit Yushu? What was her condition when she was sent to the hospital to receive medical treatment? On the evening of April 17, with these questions in mind, our reporter found the 17-year-old girl Drolma, and talked the doctor who treated her.

On April 18, Chinese President Hu Jintao visited a temporary hospital in Yushu.

She was washing her face when the quake came

Drolma is a straight-A second-year student in Yushu Senior High School. Drolma was to arrive at her school at 9:00 am on April 14, to clean the classroom according to the school rules. She got up early to prepare for the cleaning. When she was washing her face, the earthquake hit. The house collapsed, and the falling wood hit her directly on her right forearm. At that time, Drolma's parents, elderly brother and aunt have all gotten up. When they found that Drolma was buried in the ruins, they worked together to pull her out.

Injury: her right forearm was fractured

On the afternoon of April 15, Drolma's aunt sent her to a medical treatment station where the "state earthquake relief medical team" was treating the injured. It was Wang Qian, an associate physician from the First Aid Center of the General Hospital of the Armed Police Forces, who treated Drolma.

Wang, who took part in disaster relief work in the Indonesian tsunami, the Yogyakarta earthquake, the Pakistani earthquake and the Wenchuan earthquake, immediately made a proper diagnosis once she saw Drolma: skin injury on face, soft tissue bruises and a fracture in the right forearm. "Drolma's arm swelled up, and the fracture in her right forearm was a closed one. The sanitation conditions in the tent cannot meet the bacteria-free standard of an operation room. So we decided to bind her right forearm to ease the tissue swelling, and let her undergo intravenous drip, anti-inflammatory and other treatments." Wang suggested that the most important thing at present is to stabilize Drolma's injury, and then she should be transferred to a larger hospital.

President Hu's visit: all by chance

When talking about Hu's visit, Drolma said: "I feel President Hu is very amiable. He asked me to believe that the doctors will cure me, and I have a bright future. I am touched by his encouragement, and I cannot hold back my tears."

Drolma said she now aspires to be a physician after experiencing the earthquake.

Wang told the reporter: "Starting on April 15, Drolma has received an intravenous drip here at 9:00 am every day. She happened to encounter President Hu when she came for treatment. It was all by chance. She will continue to receive treatment here in the coming days."
