People of Shanghai lead "green" life with creativity

2010-03-18 15:20 BJT

People in Shanghai are never short of creativity, even when they are practicing a "low-carbon" lifestyle. They draw on the collective wisdom and absorb all useful ideas, making full use of the seemingly old and useless stuff to lead a "green life" of unbounded creativity.

It is not fashionable to use disposable products

Many white-collar workers and college students in Shanghai now like to use their own chopsticks, handkerchiefs, and cups, instead of disposable chopsticks, paper towels, and paper cups. What's more, the young people suggest that self-provided items should be made of completely eco-friendly materials, otherwise they will be an invisible killer of other resources when protecting the forest resources.

Miss Yan, from a finance company, joked that people feel surprised everytime she uses her own chopsticks when eating out, and that this actually does a lot to publicize her cause. She also hoped that everyone will form the habit of environmental protection in their daily life.

Turn the waste and old stuff into new and useful things

"Worn clothes can be converted into eco-friendly bags and collages; used top-up phone cards can be turned into distinctive curtains; and old wires can be made into baskets... these are only part of the excellent creations made in a green DIY activity held in a coffee shop in Shanghai."

The shop owner said that they hold the similar environmental activities regularly, and many young people come to exchange their experiences of environmental protection in daily life, and more often than not, it is so popular that all seats are taken. Ding Xian, an ingenious DIY enthusiast who works in a foreign-funded company in Shanghai, has been a frequenter of this coffee shop for some time. "The old and useless stuff can be reused, and in this way the resources are not wasted," she told reporters.

Make friends in the bartering party

There appear more and more bartering platforms in Shanghai, which encourages people to make the best use of idle resources to create more value.

Zhong Ting was so excited in a salon when she bartered a bonsai for a novel that she would love to read. She said that they not only reuse the otherwise wasted resources efficiently, but also enjoy the pleasure of "finding treasure" through bartering. Reporters learned that people mainly exchange books, DVDs, adornments, cosmetic products, gadgets, and other personal used items in the salon.
