Liu Danyang is a 10-year-old a young pioneer from Yichang Special Education School in Hubei Province.

Liu was born deaf. He has lived with his grandparents since his parents divorced, but he is always optimistic and grateful for life. He believes that he is "a happy child." He voluntarily helped blind students in his school and donated all his pocket money to children in earthquake-stricken areas. In 2008 as one of the young pioneer representatives, he made a speech at the 16th National Congress of the Communist Youth League (CYL) using sign language, which moved all participants at the meeting. He also loves drawing and pays attention to environmental protection. His environmental protection-themed drawings have won prizes in many competitions of various levels.

A disabled young pioneer who made a speech at the 16th CYL National Congress using sign language

Liu was born on March 3 1998, National Ear Care Day. He was diagnosed with congenital deafness. On June 10 2008 at the 16th CYL National Congress held at the Great Hall of the People, Liu from Hubei Yichang Special Education School made a speech using sign language as the sole disabled child among other five children representing 130 million young pioneers all over China. The speech Liu made using sign language moved all the participants at the meeting, and all Chinese people recognize this deaf child since that moment.
