Group of volunteer help people recover lost bicycles

2009-11-18 17:00 BJT

46-year- old Sun Qian owns a bicycle store in the city of Fengcheng in Dandong, Liaoning Province. Since he organized a bicycle search team with several other volunteers five years ago, they have helped people recover more than 200 lost bicycles in five years.

In October 2005, Lu Zhenghong, a middle school student at Fengcheng No.3 Middle School, told Sun that the bicycle she had bought from his store had been stolen. Seeing that Lu was heart broken, Sun decided to find the bicycle for her. Soon after, a man came to Sun's store and asked him to repair a bicycle which Sun immediately recognized as the one he had sold to Lu. In the face of evidence and Sun's persuasion, the man returned the bicycle to the rightful owner. Sun was so moved by the happiness of the middle school student that he decided to voluntarily help people who had lost their bicycles.

By the end of 2007, Sun had organized a team of nine cycling enthusiasts to form a volunteer bicycle search team in Fengcheng. Sun was unanimously elected as the team leader.

The team quickly became famous in the local area. One day in May 2008, Lang Wenjie, a student at Fengcheng No. 5 Middle School, asked Sun to help him find his lost bicycle. The team roamed the streets of Fengcheng for 10 days, and on the eleventh day they found Lang's bicycle at a local temple fair by checking the steel specification. Lang offered the team 50 yuan to express his gratitude, but they refused to take the money.

Over the years, Sun and his team continually sum up their experiences of the process of finding bicycles. They pay attention to clues in the areas where bicycles are frequently stolen, and they also turn bicycle thieves into informants providing information.

Less people lose bicycles in Fengcheng now thanks to the team's efforts. During the interview, the reporter learned that Sun and his team have spent a lot of time and money finding bicycles over the years, but they all think it's worth it for the joy of helping others by finding their lost bicycles.
