A traffic accident took away their happiness

Recalling her first marriage, Yang said she had no regrets. "If I had a change to live again, I would still choose to marry Zhu."

Zhu, 54 years old, is originally a native of Teng County. In the 1990's, Zhu, who was over 30 years old at that time, came to Longsheng to collect garbage. His business went well and he quickly opened a garbage collection shop. At that time, Yang, over 20 years old, had just left her hometown and worked in a restaurant in the county town, where she met Zhu, who often went to the restaurant to collect the garbage. Soon afterwards, she was attracted by this simple and honest man. They gradually fell in love.

At first, Yang's family was strongly opposed to their marriage as Zhu was 14 years older than Yang. Later, they agreed because they could not change Yang's mind and they gradually accepted Zhu's honest and hardworking character. Zhu and Yang finally married in 1995 and their son was born in 1996.

The first four years of their marriage was the happiest time in Yang's life. Her husband was very considerate to her and their son was lovely. They also opened a fast food restaurant. Good times do not last long however. On the Mid-autumn Day of 1999, Zhu was hit by a fast-moving motorcycle in front of their house. His head was seriously injured and he lost consciousness. After about two weeks in the hospital, Zhu woke up but was paralyzed.

She never deserted her paralyzed husband and continues to take good care of him

This unexpected accident completely changed Yang Haiying's life. She, with her son who was only three years old then, took her husband to many places, such as Guilin and Liuzhou, for treatment. There was still no substantial improvement, however. Advised by the doctor, Yang Haiying settled on simply to taking him home.

Looking back on those days, Yang Haiying never ceased shaking her head. On one hand, she had to look after her husband; on the other hand, she had to take care of her child. The maintenance of the entire family was a heavy burden for her to bear. Her husband wasn't able to speak, and could not go to the toilet. Thus even making the bed became her daily family chore, often making her work into the night.

What made things more difficult for Yang Haiying was that Zhu Ming often slept in the daytime and woke up at night followed by crying for no reason. At that time, Yang, who was tired after a day's work, had to get up just a few minutes after she had laid down in bed. She not only had to take care of the boy who was crying but also give medicine and a massage to Zhu Mingjia.

She remembered that once, late at night, Zhu suffered from epilepsy and stomach hemorrhaging. Suddenly, his mouth was full of white foam and blood out. He tumbled from the bed with his body shaking. The scene horrified the young boy as well as Yang. With tears running down her face, she appeased both the boy and the husband. She wasn't able to raise her husband up, however, who weighed 80 kilograms. At last, she managed to lift him up with the help of the neighbors.

"To be honest, I thought of giving up at that moment. I wanted to end all my suffering through death. However, the sight of my suffering husband and the young, helpless boy made me have second thoughts: how could I desert them?" Yang told our reporter with a tinge of emotion. Thus, Yang Haiying resolved to take care of Zhu Mingjia alone, and the next four years passed instantly.
