Deng Xiaoping and Mrs.Thatcher

In 1982, the Chinese Government, guided by Deng Xiaoping's great concept of "One country, Two systems" and peaceful reunification, began the two-year long historic negotiations with the UK Government, and signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration on 19 December 1984. In accordance with the Joint Declaration, the Government of the People's Republic of China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on 1 July 1997, thus opening a new chapter in the annals of Hong Kong.
