China´s grain production would not be badly affected by the drought in southwest China, Liu Ning, vice minister of water resources, said at a press conference here Wednesday.
Southern China is facing the worst drought in a century. By March 16th, nearly 6.5 million hectares of farmland had been affected, and more than 20 million people faced drinking water shortages.

So far the government has offered more than 2.5 billion yuan to combat the drought. More than 15 million people are involved in the relief work and have already solved the drinking problems for more than 12 million people and 6.7 million head of livestock.
In Yunnan Province, the drought is still getting worse. Experts say hot and dry weather will continue in the province for the next two months.
Hundreds of engineers and workers are helping farmers dig wells to tap into ground water. Farmers have been urged to replace withered crops with drought-enduring plants, including early maturing maize, grapes and jujubes.
Up to March 16th, 12 cities in Guangxi are affected by the drought, in which 1.8 million people are faced with a serious drinking water shortage, with more than 0.5 million hectares of farmland affected by the drought.
By digging wells, and saving water from power generation, the county has stored up 3 million cubic meters, ensuring that basic drinking needs will be met.
12 of the 14 cities in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are affected. Nearly 2 million people and 870-thousand head of livestock are also in dire need of drinking water.
In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region´s Fusui County, to ensure necessary conservation, local officials have stopped using water to generate power since last September. Farmers are covering their land with plastic to reduce evaporation.
