Tibet's progress over the past decades and the challenges facing Tibetans are the key topics at the forum.
Tibet's vice chairman, Nyima Tsering, says the region is aiming to develop an open economy, and promote regional economic and trade cooperation.
He says this forum, the first of its kind, will help Tibet in achieving these goals.
Nyima Tsering, vice chairman of Tibet Autonomous Region, said, "The forum is a good international platform. We, with all our own experience, will brief the world on the great changes in Tibet. Our Tibet is an open Tibet. We need the international community's understanding and support."
The senior Tibetan leaders also hope that there will be more events of this kind, so people around the world will really understand Tibet.
And forum participants echoed this view.
Franz Loschnak, president of Austro-Chinese Econ. Co-op. Support, said, "The activities will promote the world's understanding of the culture, economics and heritage protection in Tibet's past, current times and the future."
The forum is sponsored by the Chinese State Council, the Chinese Embassy in Austria, and several international bodies such as the Industrial Development Organization of the United Nations.
